In our culture today the church is often treated with contempt, particularly in intellectual and cultural circles. Why? Perhaps the church has lost respect because of its shameless pursuit of respect. In many ways the church has been reduced to groveling for approval at the feet of our culture. It has transformed itself in an effort to appeal o te culture with rock-band services and a new glitzy face. We try to appeal to people by becoming like them. Have we given up a piece of ourselves to the mob in the hopes that they would like us?
This is a rough idea, and needs polishing. But I think there is some truth in it. It may germinate for a while and pop up again.
